Trondheim, Norway
25-26 July 2002
Trondheim is my Hurtigruten departure point. The
Hurtigruten journey actually starts from Bergen and takes 6 days to reach Kirkenes. I
could not get a cabin from Bergen and there was a last-minute availability from Trondheim.
I think Trondheim is a good starting point for those who cannot spare 6 days in a ship.
Trondheim is a beautiful town and it is worth to
spend one day wondering around many beautiful and historical sights.
The site where Trondheim is situated has been populated for a
long time. At the end of the 10th century, the Viking settlement there experienced a sharp
upheaval when a prince, Olav Tryggvason, returned from England and claimed the throne -
and started to convert the region to Christianity. The place became the first capital of
the country, and from here the large Norwegian kingdom was ruled - from the Kvitsjøen in
the east to north America in the west. The wooden church Nidaros was built as the first
church in Norway, and on the same site is now Nidarosdomen towering over the town.
Nidarosdomen is a fascinating church with lots of decorations.
The facades are decorated with quantities of sculptures, some of them really grotesque.
