North Cape has been a point of interest for many special persons for many years. The rock plateau got its well known name in 1553 by the British Captain Richard Chancellor, on 'Edward Bonaventure', while he was trying to find the Northeast Passage to China. Among the persons who have visited North Cape are the priest Francesco Negri, who in 1664 walked here and became the first tourist. Louis Philippe of Orleans, who visited as a tourist in 1795 during his exile from France - where he later became king, sent a statue in gratitude for the hospitality he was shown. In 1861 the German Carl Vogt began what became a ceremony for many - celebrating the visit with champagne. The Swedish/Norwegian King Oscar II visited in 1873, leaving a commemorative stone. In 1893 the ships of Hurtigruten began making stops under the rock, so that tourists got a shorter way to the top. Just 1,008 steps, mor or less!  The King of Siam in 1907, King Chulalongkorn, had his monogram made in a rock. In 1989 his granddaughter Princess Maha Chakri Sirindborn opened a small Siamese museum in the North Cape Hall. Among the more unusual ways to get to North Cape have been people skiing from southern Norway, one came running from Paris, France (4,500 kilometres in 85 days!!) and one came from Oslo on a bicycle and returned windsurfing along the coast.
